Breaking up is hard to do. The American kitchen table has had a close relationship to dairy for generations. But our love affair with cheese and ice cream has blinded us from the truth– that cow’s milk has been fueling us with high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat. According to the American Heart Association, “bad” cholesterol found in meat and animal products gradually build ups in the walls of your arteries, thus increasing your risk for heart disease and stroke.
Additionally, the high demand for dairy has caused worldwide devastation to the planet and harmful living conditions for dairy cows. Animal agriculture, which includes dairy farms, is one of the leading contributors to climate change. By making the switch to plant-based, non-dairy milk you are benefiting your health and the well-being of our planet.
It’s time we move on and commit to a healthier and happier future!
Did you know there are multiple non-dairy milk choices that are nutrient-rich, safer for the environment, and free of animal products? Soy and almond milk have gradually made their presence known in grocery stores and coffee shops, but there are even more plant-based milks made from hemp, oats, flax, and other sources. The best method when debating between brands is to go for the least processed milk. Check the labels and avoid brands with unnecessary ingredients. Preferably you want to find one with no added oil or sugar. Two of our favorite brands for clean organic non-dairy milks are Eden Foods and WestSoy.
If you’re in an experimental mood, try making your own. Homemade non-dairy milk from almonds, oats, flax, or hemp can be delicious and often cheaper versions. Once you get the hang of it, get creative by adding your own flavor combinations. Vanilla, cinnamon or mint are just a few examples of yummy flavors that pair well with coffee, smoothies, or cereal.
There is no denying that calcium is a significant nutrient for our bodies’ growth and well-being but dairy milk is not the only source of calcium. Greens such as kale, broccoli, and cabbage all provide calcium. Oranges, tofu, cinnamon, and sesame seeds so as well. By following a healthy plant-based diet, you will receive your daily requirement of calcium, plus many more vitamins that are not found in dairy milk like magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin K and vitamin D– all positive contributors to bone health.
By educating yourself on the benefits of non-dairy milk you’re making a significant step in ditching dairy, and moving on to a better you!
